Fable 2 for PC?

Since Fable TLC was released for the PC there's always been a lot of speculation about Fable 2 being released for the PC. It's pretty obvious that it's not going to be released for PC at the same time as for the XBox 360, but it might easily be released afterwards; there are some good reasons for it.

For the time being it's only sure Fable 2 will be released for the Xbox 360. That's the official Lionhead line. Molyneux justified it with:
I'd rather get one single format absolutely nailed, and then think about other formats.

Shame for all the PC users, but at least they'll focus on one game only, so it'll be really polished.

    One single format absolutely nailed

It is of course very important for Microsoft Game Studios to get some exclusive AAA titles out for the 360, especially around the time when the PS3 starts dropping in price; they took a hammering with last generation's Xbox and really need to do well in this generation. But they also want to push Windows, especially Vista, onto people, so they need some 'killer games' there too. If Fable 2 sells well they will definitely want it for Windows, and they can just throw some money at it until it's ported - that's not such a big problem. Since the success of the Xbox 360 is more urgent to them (there's no real competition for gaming on computers, but Sony's PS3 and the Wii threaten their console), they'll prioritise it to the 360.

More interestingly, can Fable 2 as a game even be fully ported to a PC? Fable TLC showed that the controls and everything else that was in Fable can be done on a PC, but then Fable 2 will have some new things. Molyneux just keeps hinting about co-op play over Xbox Live.
As a designer, I'm going to rely on that friends list. It's changed the way I think about games. I'm no longer just thinking about you, I'm thinking about you and your friends. That makes a big, big, big difference in the way I approach designing a game.

    Xbox Live for Windows

(Word of warning, he might not have been talking about Fable 2 - it could be totally single-player.) Until last week, Windows didn't have access to Xbox Live, but then at the GDC they announced it: the Xbox Live system will be extended to Windows Vista. You can access your account through Windows or the Xbox, and you only need the one account - but you do need to pay for that, same as before. Best of all, you can play Live games against anyone, whether they're using an Xbox or a PC. The first game that is going to ship with Live integrated is Halo 2 for PC, but from now on any and all games for Vista could do. This means that anything Fable 2 does on the 360 it can now do on a Vista PC ... so there's nothing in the way of Fable 2 coming out for the PC.

Of course, that doesn't change the fact that Fable 2 is going to be Xbox 360 exclusive for now; Molyneux is still going to concentrate on that. But it does mean that maybe 6 - 12 months after Fable 2 comes out we could see a PC release.

Quotes from an interview on IGN; the Live story is on the Inquirer.

Great Post I get the feeling the porting XboX games to the PC is easier than porting them from PS3 Games

I really hope Fable will come for PC.

I'm not going to buy xbox for it, and if it will be for xbox only, I won't even buy that game.
    Btw, xbox sux.

Microsoft being the publisher, the odds are better-than-average that we will see a PC version of Fable 2 coming out, just not for some time after the 360 version is released.

Lol, they have some good quotes.

There are currently no plans to bring Halo 2 to Mac, PlayStation 9 or the Commodore 64.

Interestingly they don't mention Live at all there, other than comparing their Party System to a certain feature on Live - so hopefully that's out of date. The quotes in the INQ article certainly suggested cross-platform play (although I'm not so sure anymore):

We're bringing together two communities that share a passion for playing online games

Edit: I think that it takes Gold to play closs-pratfolm. http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070314-microsoft-brings-xbox-live-to-windows-gaming.html

The third entry in the Halo 2 Vista FAQ, however, says that "Halo 2 Vista players will only be able to against other Vista owners." So Live is quite pointless for it. Unless you're forced to use it for PC multiplayer gaming as well. In which case I won't be getting it at all. Paying for online gaming is ridiculous.

Interesting; how did you manage to comment with no username? :D By the way, < * blockquote>and < * /blockquote> are used instead of [quote]. More details on the forum: http://forums.loinhead.net/ Good to know that PC multiplayer is still free, although I don't see what the big deal is Ravek. ;)

I heard in the E3 preview of Fable 2 that PM got quite a few death threats concerning the matter ^^ ... People prepared to kill if he doesn't release it on PC... talk about your fanatics :paranoid: .

I personally pray he'll release it as well... not only for the sake of his life and the future of LH, but I don't want to buy an Xbox 360  .

Same here. The only XBOX 360 game which interests me for now is Fable 2. There were some other games, but I lost interest in those. So... Yeah, it had better come out for the PC as well, even if it comes half a year (or an entire year) later! :P

Ah shame really. I'm really looking forward to Fable 2 and there aren't many other great games for XBox 360 so low chances that I'm going to buy one 60% just for that. I'm sure it will be released on PC in the near future as well but there might be a pretty long wait  .

How about they just make such a great Fable 2 for 360 release that they don't need to make a Fable 2 TLC :P

The chances of that? :P I know he's actually said they'll be polishing and polishing, but it sounds familiar (not sure) and when do things ever go to plan? Who knows how much they're actually Microsoft's bitch? :D Not that I don't want to believe him ...

Oh, fel! you and your crazy ways!
While your doing that, can you make Sega release a decent sonic game? :rambo:
It might be a bit harder than getting an MS owned company to release a PC game though! :paranoid: ^^

Speaking of MS-owned companies, anyone see this ?

As to why Microsoft didn't purchase Bizarre Creations for itself, if, in fact, it didn't make an offer, Pachter suggested the company might not have wanted to acquire the developer after its experiences with Lionhead and Rare.

What is Pachter hinting at?!

hmm, interesting... i know Rare havent exactly exceeded sales expectations, and Im not too sure on how seriously M$ takes the Fable franchise. Im sure i read a Bill Gates quote about Fable being for kids/girls?
    I am neither, goddammn it!

Anyway, Lionheads xbox contribution is still far off, whereas other Microsoft companies have released several titles, i think?
im tired. ill answer properly after a kip.... :P

I played Fable:TLC on PC and loved it, so I hope they decide to release Fable 2 on the PC, and give it a little more effort then just a port, loved making my own skin in TLC as well, true customization is very nice ;) part of what sets "loinhead" games apart.

If they do make Fable2 for PC I hope it doenst force you to use "Games for windows live" have an aversion to consoles and prefer old tcp/ip(although windows live seems to go with your policy for ease of use and is supposed to automatically do NAT/PAT for less... tech savy people)

Anyways ill keep my eyes open because one way or another im sure Fable2 will be a game of its own, keep up the good work!

Hells yeah, I'm sure a release on the PC would be a repeat of the Fable / Fable TLC situation, considering that worked so well for them. I'd just like to see a better control scheme, anyone play TLC? That was a disaster on the PC.

Games on PC is a disaster in my eyes ^^ I haven't got the finger dexterity for pressing a bazillion keys at once like I was rrequired to do on B&W on my laptop :(

yeah cant believe I didnt mention that, thought I did. Besides the apparent radial controls on xbox(cough oblivion on pc cough), I really would like some real key bindings for some real control!. I'm not so faithful in the one button combat idea like peter seems to be. Sounds kinda like The Witcher to me, which was a nice RPG but combat took me like maybe 60secs to master then again im not the most mainstream gamer ;)

Haha, yeah, how long until you've got the tapping thing figured out?

How are you going to have three combat types with a button each on the PC? Could be a click-fest (although come to think of it the 360 version would be a tapping-fest anyway!). But how would you get three attacks on the mouse? Maybe scrolling furiously makes you shoot fireballs? :P

lol wouldn't surprise me I mean from the leipzig footage ive seen so far the spells charge up, maybe its one press on the scroll to start and then you furiously scroll to charge it up :P

Probably would end up with just a radial selection for magic, gun, melee weapon(hope more then just a sword) so scroll cycles em and then the usual left click fire, shift I think it was for locking targets? ><

    fel64 ~ Laked Nadies

yeah, that actually works pretty ok. Could just ... hold down the middle button, I guess, or scroll if you want to. Or scroll is your radial select?

I am amused at the notion that ANY game should be made for a console and then "ported" to PC. The way games are made - they are made FIRST on PCs. They are they then "ported" to consoles, after or during development on a PC. So when a game is "ported" to PC, it is actual made on a PC, ported to a console, then ported back to the PC where it originally came from.

Since all games are originally developed on PC - why the trouble with bring the PC version? It's strategy. Has nothing to do with quality - which if thaat were the case they would make the PC versions first (which have much higher quality than any console).

They're mostly made on PCs, and in some ways they'll run on PCs (I think they compile two different versions?) but they're never really finished for a PC. They still need an Xbox controller plugged in to get the proper controls. They never optimise for PCs or do bugfixes for the huge variety of hardware. It's not like a commercially viable version is finished on the PC just as a byproduct of developing for the Xbox.

This is just like an extension of the Microsoft Is Evil thing, fo'sho. ~_~

I really hope that Fable II is on PC! I've been wating like 3 years for it to come out, and now they say it's on X-Box 360! Now that I have Windows Vista, not Windows XP, I have to hope it's gonna work! :(

PS No offence but the XBox360 costs way too much, I wonder if they couldn't put PS2,PS1,Wii,Ds,PSP,XBox, etc... on the PC, then it would save more space and cost more (but still, everything in one!)
    :) !
